A gentleman by the name of David V. Roberts, for reasons of
health, moved to this community from Saint John, New
Brunswick and feeling the need of a church donated land to the
trustees of the Baptist Chapel at Gondola Point and assisted in the
building of a chapel.
A committee was formed comprising of
David V. Roberts, James Kierstead, Elizab Vincent and George
Roberts of Portland,Saint John. Mr. David Roberts gave a
large quantity of lumber which was brought from Saint John
by scow, and the building of the original church on the Gondola Point Road, overlooking the beautiful Kennebecasis River,
was soon underway. Rothesay Baptist Church began its first Service on August 5, 1855, with the following ministers
present: Rev David Crandall, Brother Francis, Brother Bell and
Brother Nutter.
Rev. Bell preached at the afternoon service from the text Isaiah
60:7 "I will glorify the house of my God." Mr. Nutter used
Psalm 27:7 "Hear, 0 Lord when I cry with my voice; have
mercy unto me and answer me." The passing years brought changes in various ways. The
faithful souls who had begun this great work passed on and
were replaced by others who sought to carry on the Lord's
work with very little money and few people.
Over the years minor changes were made to the interior of the
church and during the late 1920's and 1930's additional land was
purchased. A parsonage was constructed adjacent to the church, and a
hall was built to accommodate the growing Sunday School.
Sunday School has been held almost continually at Rothesay
Baptist since the beginning of the century. In 1965, additional
Sunday School rooms and other facilities were built on the left
side of the Church. In 1970 , the interior of the main Auditorium
was renovated to turn the facilities into a multipurpose area.
Continued growth at RBC made it necessary to consider construction of a
larger church facility and additional parking space. Several locations were
considered and the decision was made to build on
the Vincent Road. It is interesting to note that the current
property is on the Roberts' estate and was purchased from
descendants of David V. Roberts whose generosity contributed
so much to the church's birth. >In December, 1975, the final service was held in the little church
on Gondola Point Road. The church and parsonage were
subsequently sold to a Pentecostal group and is still being used today as
a place of worship.
December, 1975 saw the opening of our
new church with a seating capacity of 600. Some expressed a desire to give the new edifice a different name
as strangers sometimes found the name "Rothesay" a bit confusing as they expected to find the church in the town of Rothesay.
Others felt the original name should be retained.
At its time of
first organizing, it was the only Baptist church in the Rothesay
parish, thus the name.
As the Lord continued to bless, 1979 saw the completion of a
Christian Education building to accommodate the ever growing
CE programs.
In 1985,another major expansion was completed to the glory of God. This expansion included a new Auditorium suited to
accommodate 1,112 worshippers, a new administrative section and a regulation size gymnasium.
